Baked Baked Beans
The recipes I share in my blog posts are ones I love and which meet my criteria of being quick and easy to save time. They must still serve up big flavours though and baked baked beans is one of these recipes for me and my family.
It can be whipped up quickly and put in the oven to bake with no fuss. I find the most painful part is probably chopping the onions so keep some tissues handy. Don’t be tempted to leave them out though, they are integral to the dish.
Budget Friendly
A huge plus of this recipe is that it is not only rich and delicious but does not need any expensive ingredients. I also make it in advance, pop it in the fridge when cool and heat when I need it. It makes entertaining a lot easier and frees the oven up for something else. My friends and family will tell you I tend to over cater. For crowds the recipe is easily doubled and is great with leftovers the next day.
Although this is a braai (barbecue) favourite my mom also served it up for dinner with a few clever additions or tweaks. The recipe calls for bacon but my mom often added chopped Vienna sausages or pork sausages. I have also eaten it with pork chops although I think Kassler chops might be a bit too much.
Are baked beans nutritious?
Baked beans are low in fat and calories and high in dietary fibre so they are nutritious. They are also a good source of protein and minerals. This ticks all my mom boxes but I want you to remember that canned beans might also be high in sugars and salt. Check the tin before you buy it to make sure and always buy the best you can afford.
