Free Printable Gratitude Page
Are you enjoying building your own personal planner and becoming more intentional about how you plan and spend your days? This week’s free printable gratitude page is all about becoming more intentional about gratitude.
Why should I keep a gratitude journal?
If you have never kept a gratitude journal you are probably asking why should I keep one? The answer is quite simple – research has shown it makes you happier. How then you ask? There are many reasons but here are some of them:
- By writing things down you are able to feel more positive emotions and improves your self-esteem;
- You are better able to reflect on what makes you truly happy and improves your overall mental health;
- It causes you to focus on the positive and away from the negative and therefore lower your stress levels, chances of burn-out;
- It helps you sleep better; and
- Increases your resilience.
Let’s be honest with all that’s happening in the world and has happened in the past 2 years this might not seem realistic and even possible. The danger is that we get caught up in all the negativity and bad news we see on the internet and the news and it becomes very easy to forget about the good things that happen to us.
Keeping a gratitude journal forces us to pay attention to the good things our lives which we might otherwise take for granted.
My top tips for keeping a gratitude journal
- Start small and decide what you can commit to. Don’t try to list 10 things every day because when you first start you’ll find it hard, get discouraged and give up even before you have really got going. Perhaps start with 3 things or even one. Find what works best for you. The free printable I am including in this post does not prescribe how, when and in what format you need to write so make the process your own.
- Write when you have some quiet time – if you are busy mom with kids to get to school every morning it does not make sense to try and keep a gratitude journal in the morning. Maybe it’s better for you to wait until the kids are in bed? Or see when you normally have a few quiet moments during the day and set aside some time then to journal.
- Start to look for good during the day with the intention of writing about it in your gratitude journal. This helps you consciously shift your focus from the negative to the positive.
- Try to capture as many details as possible. I’m a detail person so this might be easier for me but the more details you write about the experience you are reliving, the event or the memory you are grateful for the more it comes to life and reinforces the positive feelings you had the first time.
- Writing occasionally is better than forcing yourself to write daily. As you form the habit it will become easier to write and to write more often. Remember gratitude journal is supposed to be a joy not a chore!
